There is perhaps no greater challenge facing rural communities than that of health care. Not only is it difficult to attract a shrinking number of doctors and nurses to remote areas, but centralization of health-care services seems to be taking some services out of small communities.

To the Editor, Every spring unsuspecting – or forgetful – drivers cringe as they hit major holes in rural roads. Every thud makes the holes deeper to the point of being impassible, requiring road crews to repair the holes with gravel (which must then be graded off after spring thaws).
